Hunting for Wild Trout on the Souhegan River
Hunting for Wild Trout on a popular southern New Hampshire river in areas off the beaten trail, where the likelihood in finding and catching native brook trout still exists. Sharing what I find with others who are willing to skip the usual fishing holes for areas a little more remote and off the beaten path. Paraphrasing New Hampshire poet, Robert Frost, in his poem “The Road Not Taken”, Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
Turns out the area I fished is also known for Bigfoot sightings and reports. Here are the links to articles and reports for Bigfoot activity on the river and in adjacent areas. Good luck with that. Not something I was looking for.

Unveiling Connecticut River's Underwater World: Fly Fishing Adventure

One of things I get a kick out of when filming with my daughter, Megan, is her spontaneity and curiosity. Our goal on this trip was to introduce Megan’s boyfriend, Alex, to fly fishing, which you will shortly see was a great success. I h...

    NH Fish & Game has fish surveys on the web but hard to find ! Shows species in a stream and even brakes down the EBT stocked vs native. BTW Rainbows will go wild & reproduce. Natives are in almost every small feeder stream if they if they got cool, clean & well aerated moving water. LFOD !

      Hi Tom, you are correct! I've caught very small rainbows on the Conn. River in NH and the White River in VT, and I live next to one of those brook trout streams in NH and have caught native trout exceeding 12 inches. One of the first quetions posted to this video asked about how to find native and wild trout in NH, along with questions about temperatures, etc, which I have cut and pasted with links to Fish and Game site you mentioned, plus link to Field and Stream article for fishing tactics at differnet temperatures and mentioned video I am currently editing on fishing the Beebe River, which was restored to support trout access to cold feeder streams, replacing culverts, etc. While there are lots of streams and brooks that support native and wild trout in NH, there are rivers that no longer support trout as logging roads, dams and culverts prevented trout from headfing upstream for colder waters, not to mention other trout habitate destruction. Beautiful rivers with cold waters, but little plant life, few bugs, no feeder fish - and not enough cover for trout to hide from predators..... So I am interested in rivers that conservation groups, fish and game, and trout unlimited have gone to great efforts to restore trout habitates. Such as the Beebe River, which I recently fished and filmed (currently edtiing, which is a lot of work) So please subscribe and click on notifications and let me know what you think when it gets posted. Here is a link to a recent article in Field & Stream magazine, “A Temperature Guide for Trout Fishing”, which also speaks to the tactics to use at different temperatures. www.fieldandstream.com/fishing/temperature-guide-trout-fishing. Here are links on NH Fish & Game website worth checking out - www.wildlife.nh.gov/fishing-new-hampshire/stocking-report with links for Fly-Fishing Only Waters, Wild Trout Fisheries and a link to The Interactive Stocking Map. Currently editing video on Beebe River where stream restoration was done by the Conservation Fund - it is open to fishing, but the conservation area is gated - so you need to walk in or bike - but there are wild and stocked brook trout in this very remote area.

      Thank you! Southern NH rivers are pretty low compared to the flooding from recent storms in the White Mountains. Plus the water temperatures are now above 70 degrees, which drives wild trout to finding cooler waters in feeder streams. I’ve been fishing and filming just south of the Whites and am surprised to see water temperatures at 61 and 62 degrees in many of the mountain streams.

      Hi, here is a link to a recent article in Field & Stream magazine, “A Temperature Guide for Trout Fishing”, which also speaks to the tactics to use at different temperatures. www.fieldandstream.com/fishing/temperature-guide-trout-fishing. Here are links on NH Fish & Game website worth checking out - www.wildlife.nh.gov/fishing-new-hampshire/stocking-report Check out the links on this page for Fly-Fishing Only Waters, Wild Trout Fisheries and the link to The Interactive Stocking Map. Currently editing video on Beebe River where stream restoration was done by the Conservation Fund - it is open to fishing, but the conservation area is gated - so you need to walk in or bike - but there are wild and stocked brook trout in a very remote area. Not a fan of the East Branch of the Pemi along the Kancamagus. The river here offers little in the way of cover and food for trout. My rule for fishing rivers is to look for small feeder fish, minnows, along the banks of the river plus plant life, fallen trees, bugs, etc. Sections of the Pemi get scoured by snow runoff in the spring and then bleached by sun when the high water retreats. @@coltJello

    that's a wild amount of water - as soon as I saw the river state on your drive up, my mind went immediately to gouge and landslide risk. I'm glad you were okay - some luck was definitely with you that day. this is a common problem in Costa Rica (where they don't have nearly as many roads to evacuate) so they have strike teams on 24/7 staff to quickly fix critical roads, especially east of the capital where landslides are common. looks like Yellowstone had their stuff together, too.

      i fish with single barbless hooks and release, quickly, fish I catch. Also, the Firehole River acutually never had trout until introduced in the 1800's. And Yellowstone has rules on protecting wild and especially native fish that vary throughout the park. You are allowed to keep Invasive species that impact native trout on some rivers and lakes so you need to be aware of the rules as they vary through out park, for example Lake Trout in Yellowstone Lake as these fish are not native and are wiping out the native Yellowstone Cuthroat.

    I fished the HF in the 70s. There were large bank feeders every 20 ft and the Flav hatch was smothering. I’ve stopped by there a few times in the past 10 years or so and the river is just not the same at all. The hatches are sparse….the bank feeders were nowhere to be seen…..the river just looked dead compared to 50 years ago. Just sad what’s happened to the RRR.

      Hi Alex, quick question - further downstream on the Firehole or Madison? I like fishing with different bamboo rods in my vids. I like rods built by the old masters, as well as rods built by today's bamboo rod makers. Today's makers are as good if not better because they can leverage the experience of the makers in the past and take advantage of improved materials (especially glue) and tools used in their workshops. I am aware of Headwaters bamboo, but have not had the opportunity to cast one of their rods. On this trip to Yellowstone I fished a couple of bamboo rods. On the Firehole I fished a Payne 401L (8 1/2' 4 wt). On the Madison I fished a Jenkins GA80-35 (8' 5 wt), which I might have fished in this video, but certainly in a seperate video I posted below Hebgen Dam.

On the Madison, I'll take my boat & put in at Palisades, for a day going down to Varney. that river's never without serious wind though! I have 2 Headwaters rods, a 5wt and a 7' 4wt. The 5wt seems a little sluggish, but that little 4wt is very nice, and has a surprisingly long reach when you want to throw more line!

      Yes, I know the South Branch only too well. I used to catch and move stocked trout down river from the bridges after they stocked, but it began to feel like work and then I questioned why was I moving big trout that might feed on smaller wild brook trout. I now encourage "put and take" and get stocked trout out of the river as soon as possible and wish NH Fish and game would not stock a wild trout fishery. Get your hands on one of the old maps published on line and look for where the old mills were located. There are still some broken down dams, and deep man made pools, mill water holding area, where wild trout can be found, including holdover stocked trout. I caught a large rainbow two years in a row (whose colors were dark green) 5 miles up from where they stock on the late harvest section.

      Thanks! You’re the second person to ask this in literally the past month. I had to think about it. My first fly reels were left hand retrieve. It felt uncoordinated to reel with my left hand. I’m right handed. That’s the only reason I can think of.

      Okay, I think I better understand you now. I’m also right handed, but unconventionally when shooting pocket billiards I hold the thick end of the pool cue with my left hand (like a lefty because that’s what seems comfortable for me). And because I’m not playing on the pro circuit or moonlighting as a pool hustler, I doubt anyone notices this shortcoming of mine. But if like myself you cast with your right hand (and just think of your fly reel as something which simply “holds your line” as you strip the line in with you’d left and worry about getting it back on the reel after landing the fish), I think you’ll find this can save you a lot of time (and hassle). 😇

      Yes - turns out the large males wander around on their own and don't stay with the herd, which is led by matriarchs.

    Why do you have a right hand retrieve when you cast right handed? Just curious.

    • @RemoteFlyFishing

      Good question....I think it's just preference. The other day I was casting with some of my older reels and I was surprised to see that they were all left hand retrieve. So at some point I switched ...

    Have been fishing those ponds for 35 to 40 years, try to get there at least once a year. Camped at the site near Upper Pond many times including with my kids when they were young, many years ago. Thanks for the video, sure brings back memories.

    Your fishing videos are amazing. Can I learn to fly in a month ? I'm in Yellowstone in August. 😊

    • @RemoteFlyFishing
      @RemoteFlyFishing 4 місяці тому

      Thank you! Yes, you can learn fly fishing in a month, and if you hire a guide or fish with an experienced friend they can teach you the basics and get you going on your first day. Over time you’ll get better. You’ll never stop learning. And now for the bad news. The thermal activity at Yellowstone in August heats up the rivers that are easy to access and the trout either head up these little streams or head back into the depths of lakes where the water is cooler. Catching trout when water temperatures climb over 65-68 degrees Fahrenheit (18-20 degrees Celsius) is harmful to trout as the struggle to land them is too stressful for the trout. There are some higher altitude mountain streams and ponds in Yellowstone where the water remains cooler in late summer, but now you’re hiking into bear country, which you definitely don’t want to do alone. Your best source for fishing advice will be with the park’s services. Have fun and get up early to avoid the August crowds and get parking spaces at the popular sites!

    I was there for the flood …we were in the last group out . The rivers were taking out roads, and we were redirected twice ..

    • @RemoteFlyFishing
      @RemoteFlyFishing 4 місяці тому

      I’m surprised they let us in the night before as the flooding was pretty bad, but I guess at that point the roads at the north gate and northeast gate hadn’t washed out and collapsed. It was weird driving around and not seeing many, if any, cars. And without cell phone service (except at some of the lodges) we had no idea that most of the park had already been evacuated. We were told to return to Madison Campground and pack up - and it was pretty clear that most people had already left. Where did you finally end up evacuating from (gate) , and where were you staying? Were you up in Mammoth?

    What about the air pollution from old faithfull?

    • @RemoteFlyFishing
      @RemoteFlyFishing 4 місяці тому

      I’ve heard that volcanoes are major contributors to air pollution, I’m not sure about geysers. But it’s not just old faithful spitting out steam and Sulphur like smells, the whole park is loaded with them. When fishing along the banks of the Firehole river you’ll come across warning signs, where the last thing you want to do is step onto a crusty surface and have it collapse on you. They're all over the place.

    Wonderful video. Some things I’ve noticed when you were casting in that pond you’re rod tip was a little bit too high just pointing it out. And if you ever decide to go again, I will make you some Gartside hoppers that will blow your mind. Mind you give me a months notice before you decide to go because it’s gonna take me some time to tie those up.

    • @RemoteFlyFishing
      @RemoteFlyFishing 4 місяці тому

      Thank you Scott! You’re dam right my tip was high. I was standing on this beaver dam and my first cast snagged and got tangled up in these gnarly bushes covering the outlet stream behind me. Plus the rod I was using was a 7 footer (or maybe smaller - I would have to check). I don’t remember every time I snag something, but I remember that snag. I love using hoppers to investigate if there are trout in a pool or stream. It’s like the old saying, “when in doubt, woolly bugger them out”, except more fun as the action is on the surface. That said I tie most of my own flies, but had not heard of Gartside hopper. I had to look it up. It’s a real beauty! Just looking at it you know it’s going to catch trout. I don’t have a pheasant skin, so I welcome your offer to tie one up for me and will give you a call out and send you a the link for the video where I fish it….and take all the time you need as hopper season is still several months off. I can be reached at sjchiggins@gmail.com if your offer is still good. Best, Steve

      Thanks, gland to hear you enjoyed it. I spend some time out west in 2021 and 2022 and relesed a few videos. Last year I spend more time visiting some of my favorite spots in New Hampshire, but only released two of the fishing trips, as I was disappointed with what I was catching, and then where I was catching trout. This spring I'm planning to revisit some of those areas, as well as favorite rivers of mine in Vermont and upstate New York. So stay tuned, and good luck taking up Fly fishing! Enjoy, Steve

    I fished in yellowstone in 2003 with dickerson taper bamboo rod Built by the late Ron Bennett of Pittsburgh Pa. I caught lots of nice bows and cuts on that 7' 6" 5wt on all the rivers that I fished.

      I know, I appologize for that. I did the best I could editing the audio to compensate for background noise. But here's the real shame - I actually have, and had with me, a set of Rode Wireless microphones, and didn't think to break them out. I was kicking myself as I ended up cutting out a lot of dialog .....

    Yeah so….no it’s not. Roughly every 200 years for the past several thousand years California gets MASSIVE flooding. In like 1860 something the governor of California was sworn in in a row boat in Sacramento because the flooding was so bad. This is common in California it just happens on large cycles that span roughly 200 years.

    • @RemoteFlyFishing
      @RemoteFlyFishing 4 місяці тому

      California did get a lot of rain (these past couple of years?). I've been to and stayed in Sacramento - I like your story about the governor being sworn-in in a row boat. In Boston, we had Mayor Curley, who was first elected to Boston's board of aldermen in 1904 and was sworn in while in prison on a fraud conviction - prior to becoming mayor in 1914.

    Everyone should see Yellowstone at least once in your life, but, It sucks in many ways. Too many people, too many rules and nasty park rangers that run around giving guests a hard time and tickets for anything they can. Also the hours long traffic jams that you will sit in instead of fishing. I will never go back to Yellowstone and there are many world class trout rivers all over this region that offer a much better experience.

      I agree regarding the crowds, way too many people, and they're building several new lodges in Canyon Village. The trick is to get up early and head to the streams - families can't get organized early in the morning, so the there is plenty of parking. later in the day I head back to my campsite and just walk to catch the evening hatch. I'm not a fan of crowds. I recall one year I had to wait for a car to leave the parking lot at Canyon Village as they have a supermarket there, the only one in Yellowstone I'm aware of, and then the lines were so long inside the supermarket I just gave up and drove back to Madison campground. I ended up heading out of the park to fish the Madison and bought food stuff to cook in West Yellowstone. Isn't that strange, I stayed in Yellowstone and drove out of the park for the day only to return late at night, oppositie of the traffic coming in durning the morning.

      “Too many rules” have ensured Yellowstone stays a world class fishery. It’s probably the best trout fishery on the planet due to the regulations and how they are enforced. You sound ignorant

    I will always remember the time Ray Mirande and I were fly fishing Yellowstone Lake in our float tubes. The size limit for cutthroat was under 18". In two days, we caught and released 127 fish. Not one was a keeper - they were all over 18"

    Trophy Stretch is such a fun place to fish!! Went there last summer during the flooding, me and a friend basically had the place to ourselves! :) Fish ID, Longnose Sucker, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Atlantic Salmon (there might be some white suckers in there too, some of them got a bit of a shorter nose/lighter coloring). Thanks for another great video, if I ever see you out there I'll ask for an autograph haha :D

      Fish IDs - You nailed it!!!!! The one fish I wasn't positive about was the Longnose Sucker, but it was the size of the scales that lead to my conclusion -- there sure were a lot of them. I saw videos of the flooding that occured a week or so after we fished the river. I've never seen the river that high. I can't even imagine fishing it with the water running that high. No wonder you had the river to yourselves, the water must have been in the trees.
